Hypnotherapy
What is Hypnotherapy/Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a deep state of relaxation and heightened awareness, similar to daydreaming or meditation. In this state of total relaxation, the subconscious mind opens up to receive helpful and beneficial suggestions.
When a hypnotherapist uses the trance process, the critical faculty and the ego are bypassed, which makes accepting suggestions even easier. Once in this state, sometimes called a hypnotic trance, patients are given therapeutic suggestions to encourage changes in behavior or relief of symptoms.
For example, in a treatment to stop smoking, a hypnosis practitioner might suggest that the patient will no longer find smoking pleasurable or necessary. Hypnosis for a patient with arthritis might include a suggestion that the pain can be turned down like the volume of a radio.
I us hypnosis as an aid to psychotherapy and by itself for clients who are only willing to receive hypnotherapy treatment. The rationale is that in the hypnotized state, the conscious mind presents fewer barriers to effective psychotherapeutic exploration, leading to an increased likelihood of psychological insight. Repeating the suggestions during each session, and with multiple sessions can allow the newly incorporated changes to become permanent.
Although the hypnotic technique allows the hypnotist to bypass the conscious mind, it does not mean the client is incapable of rejecting one or more suggestions if they do not fit with the client’s belief system. No one can make you so something you do not want to do while in hypnosis.
