LGBTQIA+ Affirmative Therapy

Affirming therapy means going beyond simply taking a positive approach to people’s identities, respecting their pronouns, or calling ourselves “LGBT-friendly.” Homophobia, transphobia, erasure, and oppression are lived experiences that LGBTQIA+/trans/GNC individuals experience daily. These experiences can affect an individual’s emotional health, relationships, and overall well-being.

An affirming therapist will understand the multidimensional impact this can have on a person, with the ability to explore this with you in a way that doesn’t make every issue as a result of your gender or sexual identity.

Your therapist will not assume that your identity is a problem for you, and maintain awareness and openness around their own limitations and privileges within their own identity in working with someone who identifies as transgender, nonbinary or gender non-conforming.

Affirming therapy is not meant to diagnose you, give you treatment for or assign you a gender; affirming therapy provides a safe and nonjudgmental space to support you in your journey of connecting to yourself emotionally, socially, mentally and physically. There is no right or wrong way to be your authentic self.
